What Do You Want to Wish?
Days and nights go pass, the sun rises and sets, the moon appears only to disappear when the sun arrives. Sometimes the moon does not appear at all for a little while. When it does appear again, it doesn’t look the same as it did and the thoughts it provokes are completely different than when it was nearing a full moon. The sun, however remains a constant, steady, predictable companion. Only clouds block it’s steady and constant presence. Even when it is obscured, we know the sun guides us. Never fickle, simply a reliable companion on our journey thru awakened consciousness. A long time ago, the sun was considered a god. People actually gave it names, Ra, Sol, Helios, Arinna, Surya, Huitzilopochtli, Inti, Kinich Ahau, Lugh, Mithra, (names from the following website: https://historycooperative.org/sun-gods-dieties-of-the-sun/ ). Applying a name to something so natural as the Sun is a way to personalize a relationship that gives reason to someone’s life. There are people that consciously “seek” the sun, somehow finding their own purpose from this concept. I recently had a basal cell removed from my skin, so, my notion of the relationship I have with the sun is somewhat more suspect than it was before. Still, I know it will return each day. Which gives me a reason to arise from sleep, or enjoy the day outside (with a hat now…), maybe wash the car. It has a steadying effect on my outlook. You could call it hope. “Oh, he has a sunny disposition!”, “What a beautiful day!” There are many cliche’s that are used regarding the presence of the sun, but what they are really saying is an affirmation of a relationship that is based on certainty. You can count on the sun. Always. You will never be denied by the sun (except if you are in the desert looking for water!), it will always be your companion and bring a sense of constant, unwaivering friendship.
I have thought of this idea my entire life. The things I am least aware of, which seem to just be, are truly pathways to transformation. My own transformation. It’s not far fetched for me to to consider my life’s journey has been guided by the things I least think about. The sun appearing every day is one of those. Another example of this for me, is my heartbeat. It is steady and consistent, a constant companion to my emotions, intellect, physical and mental functions. But, I am constantly reminded of the beating of my heart by things that seem unrelated, sorrow, frustration, despair, a sore elbow, a story I read, the company of those who’s company I most treasure, joy, happiness, the pleasure of a nice comment or being shown consideration. My heart beats through it all and sometimes it becomes the reason for all things.
A constant companion, is one that we can trust, but don’t always agree with, that is always there to offer perspective and feedback and let’s us bitch, but stays with us on our journey and somehow finds a way to give back ideas that have been buried deep down. These are powerful relationships. We are guided by them, though we may not realize it at the time. Moods can reflect this. Angry or sad one day, joyful and happy the next, for no apparent reason. Usually, we search for the companion to suit the mood. Night can be a time of peace and comfort or it can be a time for fury and anger. Day time has the same effect. Although, I believe the sun to be a catalyst for many to be more joyful. One thing is sure, we have constant companions which we rely on and quite often don’t consider at all, at least as a companion.
Given this notion, individually, no one is really alone. There are influences from the constant presence of many things; physical pain, sorrow, family, the sun, the moon, heartbeats and so many more. The next beautiful sunrise will remind you of this. The next full moon on a clear night will startle you and remind you that you are not alone. The next beautiful sunset will give you a slight pause and you will think of the sun leaving, but assured of it’s return in the coming morning. These moments are profound. All the art, science and religion that has ever been created over millennia that captures these moments are an example of the constant companionship we have with things we often take for granted and how much those relationships shape and define us. These companions are personal and at the same time, we all enjoy their companionship. They are with us all, all the time.
